An Angel, A Devil, & The Dead: Spiritwork with Patrons of Geomancy Course Series
An Angel, A Devil, & The Dead: Spiritwork with Patrons of Geomancy Course Series
A three-part course series exploring working with three very different kinds of patrons and tutelary spirits in developing our geomantic divination and magic: the angel who first taught geomancy, Archangel Gabriel; the grimoiric devil of many names, Surgat or Annobaoth; and the shades of the dead geomancers who came before us. The three 90-minute class recordings that make up this series are supported with documents including full scans of early modern geomancy handbooks, a bibliography for further study, and a full list of further course recordings available from Dr Cummins upon request.
Heavenly messages, diabolic inspiration, and the guidance of souls of those geomantic ancestors now passed – the Diviner does not measure and analyse the assemblages of the lots of fate as they fall alone. They call for guidance and the clarity of divine Light to interpret and counsel most efficaciously. Geomancers may seek such guiding wisdom in the practice of their Art from many sources of transmission, many flames or rays of Illumination. In this three-part course we will explore and celebrate a triumvirate of such tutors.
The Archangel Gabriel - instructor of Adam, the First Geomancer as well as First Father. Archangel of Annunciation, whose very words unto the Queen of Heaven are echoed in the Ave Maria. Who is said to have warned the dreaming Magi of impending peril, and from whose wisdom and counsel these Wise Ones proceeded by a different route.
The Spirit Surgat, Demon of Sunday, compacted in the Shepherds' Guild of Sagatana, the mighty senior devil of Astaroth. Surgat who is known in the Books of the Offices of Spirits as Foras and as Annobaoth, who comes forth from the North. Who teaches necromancy as well as geomancy. Who telleth of treasures, and who keepeth them, and how they may be come by, and who giveth true answers.
The Ancients of the Points of the Earth. The Dead Geomancers who have come before us. Those who hear our prayers and who comfort and strengthen the hand of the projector. To whom we can appeal for blessings, tuition, and guidance in setting our shields, counselling our querents, and studying the mysteries of our worldly Art.
This course will call a convocation of these tutelary spirits of geomancy to explore their natures, operations, and empowerments for the geomancer who seeks their aid. Protocols, materia magica, charms, and conjurations for working with each of these geomantic tutors will be discussed. By heavenly dawning rays, flickering infernal flames, and the floating ghost-lights of our forebears do we illuminate our earthly Work.
The three class recordings of this course series breakdown as follows:
Session 1: God Is My Strength
In which we honour and celebrate the archangel Gabriel and the patron of geomancy and the first teacher of the mysteries of this divine oracle to the First Man, First Father, and First Magician, Adam. We discuss what it means to repair to angelic assistance, guidance, strength, and wisdom; before focusing on Gabriel’s religious and folkloric roles and purviews: from prayers, to household shrines, and from incense and oil formulary to feast day observations and rites. In the course of this session the importance of sacred purity, divine inspiration, and revelation are carefully considered.
Session 2: A Cunning Animal
In which we delve into the murky grimoiric record of pre-modern nigromancy to consider how conjuration of a geomancing devil may offer us insights and empowerments. We assess the ‘hot’ and amoral nature of such diabolism and some best practices around navigating a range of hellish spirit protocols, before focusing on consideration of the portfolio of infernal offices of Surgat, a devil of geomancy and much much more. We discuss implicit and explicit pacts, the procedures of the Grimoirium Verum and other demonological manuals, and ground work with this particular spirit in the context of their appearances, variations, and sympathetic alliances, before presenting some practical manners to work alongside this wise and powerful devilish spirit.
Session 3: Good Doctors
In which we celebrate the lives and works of the ancestors of this noble oracle, the dead geomancers who came before us. We begin by grounding students in a solid foundation of the fundamental whats, hows, and whys of pre-modern necromancy and sciomancy, the divinations done by and with the shades of the dead. We pay homage and consider the benefits of working with dead magicians, examine some precedents in the grimoiric record, and rehearse some helpful necromancy safety tips. We especially honour the early modern geomancers John Heydon and Richard Napier, before considering the practicalities of necromantic protocols, prayers, shrines, and tools.
